Created with TagxedoHow often have you introduced a new science vocabulary list to your students, only to have them look at you like you made the terms up on the spot?  For me, I’d say this happens most days.  Encouraging students to learn high school science vocabulary words is a challenge.

I like words. I like looking at them. I like reading about their meanings. I’m a visual learner.  That’s probably why I enjoy “word clouds.”  Word clouds are a way of displaying any section of text as an attractive and visually stimulating image.

While I was looking for new ways on how to teach science vocabulary, I discovered many “word cloud generators” that are found freely on the web. Try using a word cloud the next time you introduce your students to a new science vocabulary list. I bet they’ll take a second look. Here’s a couple of sites to play around with.

Word Cloud Generators

Tagxedo

Don’t worry about trying to pronounce the name, this site will turn your boring vocabulary lists into impressive works of art.  Here are a few images I whipped up for fun.

Are you carbohydrated? That’s a typo.

Tagul

Similar to Tagxedo, the word clouds created with Tagul are highly customizable and rendered crisply.  Additionally, Tagul allows you to create dynamic word clouds for embedding into a web page.

  1. I love the idea of a word cloud. I teach 9th grade biology and I think this would help with my visual learners.
